Abstract
There has been a growing international awareness that soil gas emissions may have a serious health and safety implication, especially if they are able to accumulate within a building or enclosed space. Although some soil gases occur naturally, there are many instances of higher concentrations within soils on or near land that was previously used for inductrial and chemical processes, waste disposal and dockland activities. During recent decades, the growth in population, changes in land use patterns and the redistribution of industrial activity has resulted in development on or near these sites for residential and commercial use.
