- Abstract
- After two years of planning and pretesting, the National Fire Survey, a survey of over 33,000 U. S. households, was conducted during the week of April 15, 1974. The survey was co-sponsored by the National Bureau of Standards and the U. S. Consumer Product Sfety Commission. It was conducted by the Bureau of the Census, as a supplement to the monthly Current Population Survey (CPS). The sponsors of the fire survey took full advantage of the sample selection and the Census Bureau field force full advantage of the sample selection and the Census Bureau field force already in palce for CPS. This is the first time that a survey of U. S. fire experience has been based on a statistically valid sample of U. S. households. Before we look at some of the preliminary findings, based on initial data tabulations, it is essential to describe how the survey was conducted, the scope of the survey, and the precision of the data.
