Abstract
The use of human volunteers experimentally for the purpose of evaluating the relative safety of industrial chemicals is based on 2 general principles: (1) It is the responsibility of toxicologists to determine the true health hazards of the industrial chemical environment for man; in the present context it is not their purpose to describe an environment safe for rats or mice; (2) Man is the only species that can provide the true response of man. Human source material may be obtained from 2 general procedures - ovservation on experimental human volunteers, and occupational health surveillance of industrial workers. The first general principle may be taken as obvious and requires no elaboration; the second principle requries some comment.
