- Abstract
- The paper will deal with the practical aspects of determining the fire resistance of flooring systems using unprotected profiled steel deck supported by protected beams acting compositely with the floor by means of in situ welded shear connectors. The economic reasons for the use of this flooring systems will be reviewed; particular emphasis will be placed upon the fast construction times that can be achieved and ease with which other trades can operate in the absence of supporting props. The principal types of deck will be reviewed and mention will be made of the relative merits of lightweight and normal weight concrete and the practice of eliminating final screeds by power floating to a final finish. The necessity of eliminating the application of fire protection to the underside of the steel deck will be noted.
