Abstract
This presentation describes a computer model being developed by the National Fire Laboratory of the Institute for Research in Construction, National Research Council of Canada in conjunction with the Victoria University of Technology in Australia for the assessment of the risks and costs from fires in multi-story buildings. The model consists of a number of sub-models dealing with fire growth and spread, smoke movement, occupant response and egress and fire costs. After a description of the sub-models, some preliminary results will be shown to demonstrate how the model can be used to assess the cost effectiveness of fire safety design in multi-story buildings and to determine if designs not fully complying with code requirements provide protection equivalent to that required by the code.
