Abstract
The development of the smoke cloud from a summer wildfire in a forest area was studied on a radar screen. In conjunction with photographs taken at the same time, it has been possible to follow the variations in height of both the top and bottom of the smoke column as it was blown downwind; estimates of the rate of rise of the smoke, at different heights, were also obtained. The general behavior of the smoke cloud is interpreted in terms of the prevailing winds, and the lapse rate in the surrounding air.
