Abstract
The purpose of this program is to conduct exploratory research, development and evaluation of high-strength, thermally durable, flexible, fibrous structural materials for aerospace ssytems. During the second year of the program, the tensile properties of nylon, Dacron and Nomex yarn were determined at rates of straining of 1.67 and 3,000% per second at -450 deg F. A theoretical analysis of the thermodynamics of yarn tensile tests was also carried out. The results indicate that for some materials the temperature rise which occurs during a high-speed tensile test has a significant effect on the tensile behavior.
