Abstract
The seminar will consist of two somewhat independent presentations. In Part 1, current fire safety practices and systems aboard the Shuttle will be described. Recent experimental findings will also be presented which demonstrate the possibility of wider flammability limits, more rapid flame spread, and unique phenomena in microgravity. In Part 2, a review of the state of knowledge/confusion (contradictory experimental findings) and ongoing research concerning flame spread across liquid pools will be presented, with an emphasis on the roles of gravity-driven flows.
