Abstract
Fine water sprays, through the use of twin-fluid nozzles, have demonstrated efficient extinguishment in a series of contained fire scenarios, where halon is currently used. Very small volumes of water were needed for the extinction of firece light and distillate fuel fires, whilst enhancing survivability. The effective performance of the fine water spray systems tested was attributed to the spray quality, and the directionality and coverage of the spray jets relative to the overall geometry of the protected asset. Water offers a benign alternative to halon in numerous applications, such as those investigated in this paper.
