Abstract
At the 9th International Conference of Directors of Safety in Mines Research a paper was presented describing the initial phases of research by the Safety in Mines Research Establishment at Buxton, England on the remote control of timber fires with high-expansion foam plugs in a rock tunnel. The work received extensive publicity, and great interest was aroused by the implied possibility that the method might be used successfully to control coal mine fires, which for various reasons cannot be approached and attacked by standard fire fighting measures and frequently require sealing extensive, valuable coal properties and lead to loss of production and coal reserves and occasionally loss of lives.
