- Abstract
- This report provides statistics on home fires involving thermostats, garage door openers, and other control or detection equipment. In 2002-2005, thermostats averaged an estimated 130 nonconfined home structure fires and garage door openers averaged 70. The eight types of control and detection equipment together averaged an estimated 290 reported non-confined home structure fires in 2002-2005. These estimates are based on data from the U.S. Fire Administration's (USFA's) National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) and the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA's) annual fire department experience survey.
