Abstract
This report is one of twenty six work package reports written as part of the Joint Industry Project on Blast and Fire Engineering for Topside Structures. The Project Phase 1 started in May 1990 to collate, appraise and disseminate information on blast and fire loads, and on the resistance of structures and facilities to these loads. The titles and numbers of the reports generated by this project are as follows: G1-G5 - General; BL1-BL5 - Blast Loading; BR1-BR5 - Blast Resistance; FL1-FL3 - Fire Loading; and, FR1-FR7 - Fire Resistance. The purpose of these reports is to collate, review and critically appraise the current state of knowledge in each of the listed subject areas. They discuss the current state of technology as applicable to each of these areas. They also indicte the areas of significant residual uncertainty. The objectives and scope of each report are outlined in the "Work Package Descritpions" included in each report. The reports are written for use by engineers with specialist responsibilities for specific tasks associated with safety against potential fires and explosions in the design of Topsides on Offshore Structures (e.g., as part of a Formal Safety Assessment) or for the use by their expert advisors. They are intended to be both expert and authoritative. These reports have also been used as the basis for establishing interim guidance and to identify any necessary further research or development work. These are also project deliverbles and are issued as separate documents.
