- Abstract
- Burn accident cases involving fabric products are investigated by Food and Drug Administration Investigators. The reports and any garments or fabric remains collected are sent to National Bureau of Standards for analysis and testing. Data produced by such analyses and tests were used to support the recent finding that there is a need for a flammability standard for children's sleepwear. The data base analysed for the finding consisted of 580 burn accident cases involving 1059 garments, and representing 504 injuries and 76 deaths. Analysis of the data indicated that, for the sleepwear garments category, injuries to male children in the 0-5 age group occurred nearly 4 times, and to female chiuldren 1.6 times as frequently as would be expected on the basis of the percentage of these groups in the total population. The information and data system developed in the office ofFlammable Fabrics of National Bureau of Standards for processing reports on burn accident cases is designed to provide not only statistics on frequency of burn accidents, but also information needed for research and for test development.
