Abstract
This report provedes statistics on home fires involving clothes dryers or washing machines as equipment involved in ignition. In 2002-2005, there were 18,280 non-confined home structure fires per year reported to fire departments, with associated annual losses of 26 civilian deaths, 468 civilian injuries, and $198 million in direct property damage. Dryers along accounted for 92% of these fires and all of the reported deaths. These estimates are based on data from the U.S. Fire Administration's (USFA's) National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) and the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA's) annual fire department experience survey.
