Abstract
This report provides statistics on home fires involving painting and coating equipment other power tools. In 2002-2005, an estimated 120 reported non-confined home structure fires per year involving painting or coating equipment resulted in annual average losses of 7 civilian injuries and $10 million in direct property damage. Also, in 2002-2005, an estimated 440 reported non-confined structure fires per year involving other power tools caused annual average losses of 22 civilian injuries and $13 million in direct property damage. Power sanders, grinders, and buffers accounted for the largest share (38%) of other home power tool fires. These estimates are based on data from the U.S. Fire Administration's (USFA's) National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) and the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA's) annual fire department experience survey.
