- Abstract
- We report a study of three intense forest fires, all of area about 30 km2, in which convection extended to heights ranging from 2750 m to 4300 m. The observations taken comprise surface-level wind, temperature, and humidity; mean temperature, temperature fluctuations, and vertical acceleration as measured from an aircraft; the rate of change of height of the aircraft while it was held at constant attitude; and wind profiles from double-theodolite pilot-ballon flights.
