Abstract
Under the Flammable Fabrics Act, the Commerce Department has responsibility for promulgating reasonable, appropriate and technologically practicable mandatory standards for flammability of fabrics, products or related materials. The determination that such national standards are needed is based on research or investigations into the possible unreasonable risks presented in use of these items. Wearing apparel sold in the United States is covered by the standard issued as part of the original Act in 1953. Legal notices of procedures for development of standards have been published for several categories of interior furnishings: large carpets, small rgus, mattresses and blankets. The purpose of this paper is to summarize developments toward a standard for children's sleepwear.
