Abstract
A straightforward calculation procedure is presented to enable U.S. Navy personnel and others to determine the extent of damage that may be caused by a release of carbon fibers from a burning composite aircraft at or near an air station. This procedure can be used before an actual accident or incident occurs, for contingency planning purposes; during the accident event, to assess the downwind threat; or afterwards, to permit estimation of the area which may have to be inspected and/or cleaned of the fibers. This report is written for use by nontechnical as well as technical personnel. Contingency Planning Aids for Calculation of the Area Exposed to Carbon Fiber from Composite Aircraft Accidents, provides additional instructions and forms for assessing the most probable accident scenarios.
