Abstract
Smoke particles from a series of large-scale prescribed fires ahve been collected in equipment aboard a light aircraft and analysed for mineral ash, tar, and other carbonaceous components. The approximate size of the smoke particles was also determined. Concentrations of various gases in the smoke have been estimated (carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, ammonia, olefins, oxides of nitrogen, and ozone). At the same time, scattering coefficients were measured with a nephelometer and a relationship between scattering coefficient and smoke density was obtained. Diffusion properties of the smoke columns have also been studied and information is provided about turbulent diffusion coefficients in the smoke. Results are summarized in the conclusions at the end of the paper.
