- Abstract
- Max Williams, Chief Executive Officer of the Shire of Mundaring, expressed concern about the potential growth in fire risk to the local community that will arise due to the projected growth in residential developments within the Shire. These developments will generate increased demand for additional fire and emergency service capabilities, services and resources. Projections for the next decade indicate that the planned development of two new townsites will see 2000 new homes built. Residential growth in other areas of the Shire of Mundaring will add another 2000 homes to the existing stock. These proposed developments have an estimated value of $400 million and will amount to a population increase of a minimum of 10000 people. Fire and emergency services are currently provided extensively by the community in a spirit of volunteerism. Volunteer fire brigades are supported by a full-time Fire Management Officer who is the nominated Chief Bush Fire Control Officer (CBFCO) employed by the Shire and Rangers (equivalent to two FTE's) who carry out fire prevention work. The CEO has also expressed his concern that it may be beyond the Shire's resources to ensure that the CBFCO is kept abreast of changes in technology and processes and is supported with resources that can maintain the necessary level of expertise at all times. In addition there is also no adequate means of providing suitable career opportunities or of undertaking proper succession planning.
