In 2002-2005, an estimated 230 non-confined reported home structure fires per year involving floor care equipment caused 21 civilian injuries and $5 million in direct property damage. Most (81%) of these fires specifically involved vacuum cleaners. These estimates are based on data from the U.S. Fire Administration's (USFA's) National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) and the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA's) annual fire department experience survey.
