Abstract
Functions and advantages of a smoke and heat ventilation system in case of a fire are well known. A theoretical model of dimensioning smoke and heat ventilation systems were described in 1988 by Dr. Voigt (Technical Paper in vfdb 1/91). In this paper the approach of the calculation method is described and compared with former methods (i.e. VdS, DIN) by calculating fictitious examples. We see that the calculation model responds to the changes of the influence quantitites as to be expected. On the other side it cannot be verified wether the calculated quantities, i.e., thickness and temperature of the smoke layer, are realistic or special factors should be introduced at that point. In comparison to traditional methods there is a descrepancy in the rating of the fresh air opening. That shall have according to traditional dimensioning at least double the size of the foul air opening in the roof. On the contary conform to Voigt it is necessary to determine an exact relation between the two openings if the RWA shall produce the expected efficiency.
