Abstract
The Magnitude 6.8 Northridge Earthquake of January 17, 1994, was centered under the San Fernando Valley, northeast of Los Angeles, California, one of the most densely populated urban areas in the country. Working in conjuction with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Played an unprecedented role in delivering emergency housing assistance to low-income families left homeless by the earthquake. This was the first natural disaster in which HUD played such an immediate and extensive role.
