Abstract
During the past year we have been primarily involved in an experimental investigation of the flow field produced by the transient motion of smoke in a horizontal allway-like structure. The aim of this work is to obtain an understanding of the flow of hot smoke along a ceiling during the transient period in which the smoke moves as gravity current. Heat transfer from the current to the wall can affect these flows and a study of the heat transfer process is an important part of the present work. A final report on the current phase of this work will be available in October of 1986 and a qualitative description of the apparatus and results is given here.
