- Abstract
- There are many data systems currently in use or under development that contain fire-related information. These systems are maintained by Federal Government agencies such as the National Center for Health Statistics and the Consumer Product Safety Commission, by state and local governments such as Oregon state and Date County, Florida, by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and others. Some data are collected specifically for fire research or fire department management purposes while other data are collected primarily for non-fire-related purposes and only contain fire information icidentally. The NFPA is a good example of the former since its primary concern is fire, with a large amount of effort going into the collection of fire incident data from fire departments around the country. The National Center for Health Staistics, on the other hand, collects data on mortalities in the United States, of which fire fatalities are only one part, and thus has only a subsidiary interest in fire.
