Abstract
The assumption is that technology, wisely applied, can reduce the fire problem substantially. There are several parts of the technical problem that can best be addressed by aggregating resources in a central, Federal laboratory. These include information gathering and analysis of fire hazards, fundmental research on combustion, both in chemical and physical terms, and technology development and transfer for the fire services. The job of researching and proposing standards to reduce fire hazards is, of course, a basic part of the NBS mission. In fire research this means standards in consumer products; e.g. furnishings, and construction materials, as well as fire protection systems such as detectors and sprinklers.
