- Abstract
- While the ignition and flame propagation characteristics of textile fabrics are of great importance, it is reasonable to believe that the heat generated and transferred from a burning textile material is more directly related to the hazard which arises from textile flammability. During the past year TRI has developed an approach for the measurement of such heat transfer. This measurement is different from the susual studies of heats of combustion which cannot realistically be related to hazard. This 'Note on Research' describes the experimental procedure, and summarizes some of the results that have been obtained. The data clearly reveal the complex nature of the heat transfer characteristics, and indicate that heat transfer is dependent on fiber type, fabric weight, fabric construction and other features of the burning system.
