- Abstract
- One of the reasons for the many apparent shortcomings in firefighters' turnout coats has been the lack of an appropriate national standard. To be effective, such a standard should utilize a careful analysis of the hazards faced by firefighters and the injuries they sustain as the basis for demanding but achievable performance criteria for the safety features of the garment. To be useful, the standard must be carefully grounded on meaningful research as well as a real appreciation for and understanding of firefighters' needs.
