Abstract
This paper considers human morbidity and mortality under three sets of circumstances: 1) no personal protection - no prevention of fire; 2) inadequate protection - no protection of fire; 3) prevention of fire and good protection. After the epidemiology discussion, the theoretical and practical aspects of survival through prevention and protection are examined. The helicopter crashworthy fuel system and its cost relationship to burn injury cost prevention is discussed. Personal protection through the use of fire protective garments are discussed, with attention given to the biomedical tradeoffs. Uniform comfort, degree of protection, and costs also are compared. A discussion of the assessment techniques used to select fabrics best suited for protective clothing is held.
