Abstract
A computer program has been developed to perform sprinkler response calculations for warehouse applications. This program takes into account the following factors: sprinkler-ceiling clearance, gas transport delay, virtual origin of the fire plume, convection and radiation heat transfer, sprinkler link sensitivity and sprinkler link heat loss by conduction. Four different calculation modes were included which make use of new as well as previously developed plume and ceiling flow correlations. Attempts were made to improve the performance of the older correlations to account for the aforementioned factors. Comparisons were made to ceiling jet gas temperature measurements and to a series of sprinkler actuation tests using typical warehouse sprinklers and two warehouse commodities stored on racks. Sprinkler response predictions by one calculation mode of this program were comparable to, or better than, those made by DETACT-QS for the same series of tests. Since the variety of storage commodities and configurations tested was very limited, problems may arise in the application of this program to other, untested, commodities or configurations. Significant further testing and refinement of the program is warranted.
