Abstract
A series of extinguishing tests were carried out on ten liquids with flash points in the range of -6 deg C to 234 deg C applying water from seven different sprinklers or nozzles. Pool sizes varied from 0.4 m2 to 12 m2 and nozzle heights from 3 m to 8 m. The test results are summarized. Observations and effects of pool size, nozzle type, flash point, application rate, preburn time and nozzle height are discussed. Recommendations are made regarding application rates for extinguishment. The article recommends that standardized test methods be developed to evaluate nozzles for the extinguishment of liquid pool fires.
