- Abstract
- The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) publication, A Handbook on Women in Firefighting: The Changing Face of the Fire Service, published in 1993, provided basic information concerning the status of women in the profession. The handbook updated and documented information and resources gathered from the USFA's first meeting in 1979 on "Women in the Fire Service," through the monumental increases of women in the fire, rescue, and emergency medical services in the 1980s and early 1990s. The publication reflected more than a decade of experience and programs. As more and more women enter the fire service, health and safety issues of women gain a greater audience. The knowledge base brodens as the number of women moving through the ranks of the fire service increases, providing more accurate information and a means to assess occupational health and safety risks.
