- Abstract
- The first annual report presents a summary of progress on Innovations Deserving Exploratory Analysis (IDEA) investigations for Transit Systems (TRANSIT-IDEA). TRANSIT-IDEA is part of the Transit Cooperative Research Program managed by the Transportation Research Board (TRB) through a cooperative agreement among the Federal Transit Administration, the National Academy of Sciences acting through TRB, and the Transit Development Corporation, a nonprofit educational and research arm of the American Public Transit Association. TRANSIT-IDEA focuses on innovative solutions that would enhance the cost-effectiveness, safety and security, quality of service, and customer base for transit practice. The IDEA contracts presented in this report were chosen from over 180 concepts and 70 detailed proposals submitted to the program, after evaluation of each by technical expert panels and by the TRANSIT-IDEA Project Committee. The members of the technical expert panels and the TRANSIT-IDEA Project Committee are listed in the progress report on pages ii and v. TRANSIT-IDEA is one of the three IDEA programs managed by TRB for fostering new concepts and innovative solutions to transportation issues. The other two IDEA programs are ITS-IDEA, ehich focuses on innovative products applied to intelligent transportation systems (ITS), including user services and ITS depolyment; and NCHRP-IDEA, which focuses on design and construction, materials, operations, and safety of highway systems. The results from the three IDEA programs are integrated to achieve products for application to improve intermodal surface transportaion practice. The report includes a summary list, on pages 1 through 9, of all IDEA awards and products emerging in IDEA programs managed by TRB.
