- Abstract
- In this preliminary report a proposal for a test method for fire extinguishing powders is presented as well as results from reference tests, which form the basis for the method. The proposal for the test method is based on ISO 7202 Fire Protection--Fire Extinguishing Media--Powder; certain items have, however, been supplemented and changed. The test method aims at giving both qualitative and quantitative information about the composition and extinguishing efficiency of various powders. Important is that the test methods for determining the extinguishing efficiency of the powders on B-fire and C-fire, respectively, have been changed compared to ISO 7202. For this purpose a relatively large propane flame is used and the quantity of powder needed to extinguishing it is determined. As a quantitative measure of the powder efficiency the specific need of extinguishing media is determined, REMP (Required Extinguishing Media Portion). The REMP value represents the ratio between the supplied quantities of powder and propane gas, respectively, and it implies consequently that the lower REMP value is the more effective powder. The proposed method also includes a partly changed proposal for testing of effeciency on A-fires. The flow ability of the powder is tested by means of discharge tests in a so called EFFUNC equipment. Furthermore, appropriate methods for an extended chemical-physical analysis of the powder is proposed. Large parts of the proposed changes in comparison to the ISO method are completely new and some items are pointed out, where further research and development of new methods are needed.
