Abstract
The chimney effect of humid air and of warm air in piles of wood chips causes air to flow through the material, supplying the oxygen needed for heat-generating processes, but this air current also carries heat out of the pile. Calculations show that, up to at least 100 Deg. C, only a fraction of the oxygen is consumed and that strong convection works against self-heating.
