Abstract
An overview is presented of applications of the numerical schemes based on spectral and random vortex methods in computational treatment of turbulent reacting flows. The main objective is to provide a comprehensive account of the foundation of these methods, along with a discussion on their capabilities and limitations. While the rudiments of the numerical algorithms and the computational procedures are discussed, the main emphasis is placed upon the kinds of physical phenomena that can be (and have been) captured by means of these methods. A review of relevant contributions within the past decade is furnished together with some speculations on possible future directions. The scope of this review is limited to discussions which demonstrate how these methods work, without a detail survey of all the contributions made. A reasonably updated bibliography is, however, provided for those interested in pursuing these issues in a greater detail.
