- This 15-month study involved the investigation of 101 fire fighters in-the-line of duty deaths. The breakdown of cause of death was: 45 heart attacks, 13 building collapse, 12 burns, 9 smoke inhalations, 6 apparatus accidents, 5 electrocutions, and 1 equipment failure
