- Abstract
- This report presents the results of a theoretical and laboratory study involving the formulation and evaluation of pyrotechnic mixtures for aluminum and iron vapors. Various mixtures of tungstic oxide, zirconium, with Al, Fe or Fe2O3 powders were mixed into different proportions pressed into strands, and burned at subatomospheric pressure. The mixture performance was judged by (a) qualitative observations of the plumes recorded by a movie camera; (b) burning time and (c) quantitative absorption spectroscopy of Al and Fe vapors. As a result, measurements, in a high altitude simulation tank, using tungstic oxide, zirconium and aluminum in a pressed strand configuration, indicate a release efficiency of the order of 10 to 20%.
