Abstract
An analytical solution for the asymptotic pyrolysis rate of a charring material exposed to a constant external heat flux is presented. A thermal pyrolysis mechanism is used for the specification of the pyrolysis front. The thermal capacities of the char and the pyrolyzing gases are considered negligible in comparison with the thermal capacity of the virgin fuel. A radiative transfer mechanism is proposed to be responsible for the heat transfer throught the char matrix. This transfer mechanism leads to a closed-form analytical expression for the pyrolysis rate. The analytical results are consistent with detailed numerical solutions of a complete charring pyrolysis rate is modified in order to incorporate heat transfer mechanisms through the char matrix different from the one used in the present analytical model. Finally, a methodology is unveiled which can be used in characterizing the pyrolysis properties of arbitrary materials based on a few experimental data and on our simplified pyrolysis model.
