Abstract
Shortly before 6:00 p.m. on July 20, 1993, an accidental fire occurred at the Atlanta Fulton County Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. The fire was caused by an operating open-flame food warming device which was left unattended in a press suite during pre-game preparations. The subsequent fire rapidly spread to other press suites and to adjacent private luxury suites, resulting in extensive damage to these areas. Since the damaged suites comprised only a small part of the total areas, the stadium was not closed and the scheduled baseball game was played that evening. On October 13, 1993, a fire occurred at Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas. Similar to the Atlanta fire, this fire occurred in, and caused severe damage to, several luxury suites. Local officials believe that this fire may have resulted from an accidental cause. Again, the fire affected only a small area of the stadium, allowing scheduled activities to proceed with minimal disruption. No injuries were reported during either incident. Both fires confirm the rapid growth potential of fires in furnished and decorated suites at state-of-the-art stadiums. In addition, these fires provide insight into unique problems in these occupancies once a fire starts.
