Abstract
All of management is concerned with making decisions under some degree of risk. If there was no risk element in the decision then managers would not be needed. For the purposes of this paper I will confine my comments to some developments in the process of decision making under the risk of fire. During this conference many valuable papers have been presented on fire statistics, fundamental aspects of fire, smoke and toxicity, experimental fire sutdies, test methods in standards, etc. While the contents of these papers is extremely interesting to all of us here, my work involves me in the application of this wealth of experience and research to real life decision making at the user end of the business. It is all very well to have vast amounts of research, tests and statistics produced and conducted within the institutions and research facilities, but unless this information is made available to the business man, architect or engineer, in a format which he can understand and use, then it is of relatively little value. This paper considers some methods for transferring the results of research, tests and statistical information to computer databases from where it can be retrieved and interrogated by a layman user to his best advantage.
