- Abstract
- Virtually nothing is known about the high temperature chemistry of phosphorus in a flame environment. Phosphorus compounds are known flame retardants though the mechanistic evidence is empirically based. In the present study, high pressure sampling mass spectrometry and optical spectroscopic methods have been applied to the molecular characterization of P-containing flames. The key process controlling flame inhibition and enhancement is identified as: HPO2 + H H2O + PO. New thermodynamic data are presented for NaPO2 which are present in Li/Na-containing flames.
