Abstract
All across the country fire departments take tremendous initiative and show great originality in delivering public fire education programs to their communities -- often with very limited resources. Today they are making greater use than ever of newspapers, radio, and television to broadcast fire safety messages and are working with community groups as well as their schools to enhance their delivery systems. Some departments create their own materials. Others buy almost everything from commercial vendors. But most use a combination of these two approaches. We have reviewed the fire prevention programs of many fire departments and other fire organizations. What follows is a summary that cuts across the departments and describes interesting ideas on their current public education programs and the materials they use. Following that are individual descriptions of the public education programs of 72 fire departments and five state and county fire organizations. The name, address, and telephone number of a person to contact is included with each descripation for the reader's convenience. One purpose of this review was to identify gaps for planning U.S. Fire Administration public education activities for the future. To that end specific needs were identified by the fire department people contacted. A second purpose was to see whether there were locally-produced public education materials that could be used nationally. Not only did a rich array of interesting and in many cases original public education program ideas emerge from this research, but we also were able to form a comprehensive view of the state of the art in prevention. We obtained a wealth of information on specific types of programs that should prove useful to many departments.
