- At 10:17 p.m. on July 12, 1993, an earthquake that measured 7.8 on the Richter Scale struck in the Japan Sea off southwest Hokkaido, the northernmost main island of Japan. The earthquake and the resulting tsunami, or tidal wave, caused widespread, sporadic damage to northern Japan, with the heaviest damage ocurring on the small island of Okushiri.
