Abstract
Understanding the relationships among materials, processing, microstructure, and properties is critical in improving material design. For cement-based materials, this understanding is complicated by the complexity of the microstructures forming during cement hydration. This paper outlines an approach for furthering this understanding based on the use of computer modelling, in particular digital-image-based models. Generation of starting microstructures, microstructure evolution based on cellular automaton-type rules, and property computation are discussed. The digital- image-based approach provides insights into microstructure- property relationships and offers other advantages such as ease of handling complex shapes and phase distributions, and visualization of the ongoing microstructure development.
