Abstract
The 1969 report "Fire Record of Cities", published by the National Fire Protection Association, indicated six New England Cities of similar populaitons with widely divergent records of building fires per 1,000 population as shown below: Building Fires per City Population Thousand Persons Bridgeport, CT 159,000 11.1 New Haven, CT 152,000 1.5 Holyoke, MA 54,000 10.0 Chicopee, MA 58,000 3.8 Salem, MA 41,000 18.0 Melrose, MA 35,000 0.9 Since the NFPA Fire Reporting Committee has been formulating a standard language (NFPA Standard 901), field incident manual (NFPA Standard 901AM), incident reporting form (NFPA Standard 901F), and output system for fire incident reporting, the question arises as to why these six cities, apparently so similar, yield such widely separated results.
