- A study of possible gaseous alternatives to Halon 1211 and 1301 has been undertaken. At present there are no alternatives that have all of the advantages of Halon 1211 and 1301. In Sweden and other countries we know by experience that approximately one third of all halon systems are not replaced by any specific fire protection, one third are replaced by better detection and physical reconstruction or fire suppression and that only one third are actually replaced by permanent gaseous fire extinguishment systems. Which of these three alternatives is optimal for any specific application is largely dependent on what risks to life, property and the environment are present and what investments, in terms of money and space for the fire extinguishment system, are acceptable.
