- Abstract
- This article discusses some of the key elements to be considered in evaluating the expected risk to life from fire in a building. The emphasis here is on house fires. With the move towards performance-based design and objective-based codes, the level of fire safety that is provided by a proposed fire safety design will need to be evaluated. Fire risk assessment is a methodology that can be used to evaluate the performance of fire safety designs. It gives a quantitative assessment of the level of fire safety that is provided by an installed fire protection system and thus allows a rational assessment of whether the fire protection is adequate.
