Abstract
The combustion of polymers involves a complex of reactions ranging from depolymerization to gas phase oxydation. The importance of the various competing and sequential steps depends upon the conditions of combustion: the state of division of the polymers, the available oxygen, external flow, and other variables. One method of developing an understanding of these flames is to begin with elementary flame chemistry and physics and systematically add the complexities in models of increasing realism. An attempt will be made in this paper to follow this pattern.
