Abstract
Five approaches were tested in an attempt to find a low cost method which would substantially reduce the tendency of ammunition to burn. All tests involved 105-mm, semifixed artillery rounds in wooden boxes. Various methods were used to protect the boxes of ammunition. The most successful approach involved a surface coating applied to both the insides and outsides of the boxes. The cellulosic tubes, which contained the ammunition inside the boxes, were also treated. A close second in performance was a simple treatment (two coats) of the exterior only of the boxes with an intumescent paint. A thermal insulating blanket designed to be placed over untreated boxes of ammunition did not perform up to expectations in inhibiting the spread of fire.
